How to take a photo that passes
From the ICAO photo guidelines published by Indian missions.
- Face the camera straight on, head level
- Eyes open, mouth closed, natural expression
- Even light on your face, facing a window
- Full head and top of your shoulders in frame
- A coloured top, so it stands out from white
- Phone at eye level, about an arm's length away
- No glasses, no reflections or flash glare
- No hair over the eyes, no beauty filters
- Head coverings only for religious reasons, face fully visible
What size is an Indian passport photo?
Global Passport Seva asks for a colour photo of 630 × 810 pixels with a white background where the face fills about 80–85% of the photo. That is the 3.5 × 4.5 cm passport size used across India. Some Indian missions abroad ask for printed 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) photos with a 25–35 mm head.
Is my photo stored?
No. Your photo is processed in memory to make the preview and the final image, then discarded. It is never saved to disk, a database or cloud storage, never logged and never shared. See the Privacy Policy.
Will my photo be accepted?
We follow the published Indian passport photo specifications, but acceptance is always decided by the passport office or mission. We cannot guarantee acceptance.
How do I print it?
The JPEG has its print size built in. Print at 100% / actual size, or ask a photo shop for a 3.5 × 4.5 cm (or 2 × 2 inch) print.
Does it work on my phone?
